Magazine Analysis 1

Magazine Analysis Example:

What are the conventions found in the magazine? Position of images, text, fonts, plugs, masthead, skyline, baseline, coverline, etc.

This magazine's cover has a bold masthead that catches the eye of the audience. The fonts used throughout the cover, table of contents, and double page spread are consistent and flow well with each other in the way they are presented to the audience. On the cover page, the baseline text accurately displays the articles to be found within the rest of the magazine. Another convention found in this magazine is the position of images and text on the double page spread. The placement of these elements in this magazine is a modern convention as many magazines follow the same layout of having a picture obtaining half of the left page along with an introduction underneath it and the article on the next page.

What do the elements in the cover represent?

The elements in the cover represent the masthead, skyline, cover line, and baseline. The baseline text represents the contents that are displayed within the magazine, engaging the audience and intriguing them to read further into the magazine. The cover line also represents the type of magazine this is in saying "a modern travel magazine."

Analyse the contents page and double page spread.

The contents page and the double page spread flow very nicely with each other in their presentations of images and texts on the page. The table of contents introduced the articles along with a small description on their contents. The left side of the double page spread neatly introduced the article to follow on the right side with multiple images and a small section of text.

Who is the audience for this magazine? (be specific)

The audience for this magazine is people who like travel and be outdoors, as well as people who take interest in Alaska's glaciers, Arizona's grand canyon, and lake Ottawa.

What genre is the magazine? How is this shown?

This magazine's genre is travel. This is shown in the cover line as it says "a modern travel magazine." The genre is also depicted in the presented images as they represent a travel lifestyle.

What features of the magazines analyzed will you use/not use in your own magazine?

In my own magazine, I will use the features of a bold masthead along with lines of text for the baseline, cover line, and skyline. I believe this is an effective way in getting the audience to read further into the magazine. I will also use a similar layout that this magazine used for my double page spread. I think the concept of having images to introduce the article on the left page makes the article flow well together on the two pages. The only feature I do not think I will use from this magazine is how the articles are presented on the cover. For my own magazine, I think writing a small description on the cover page will present the audience with more information that will intrigue them to read further into the magazine.
